| Stockport Summary |
Description:
|
Stockport, 6 miles South East of Manchester is a town of great history and character situated at the point where the Rivers Tame and Goyt merge to form the River Mersey. During the industrial revolution the town grew rapidly particularly because of the growth of the cotton and hat making industries. Much of its history has been preserved through careful restoration and planning and it boasts numerous examples of fine Georgian, Victorian and Tudor architecture, the most famous of which is perhaps Stockport Viaduct.
Stockport has numerous excellent shopping facilities from the Merseyway Shopping Centre to the Peel Centre and Underbank and a thriving market which has been running for almost 750 years in the historical centre of Stockport, Market Place. Stockport also offers a large selection of pubs and restaurants with excellent transport links to Manchester and the rest of the region. |
